The Kedarnath is located in Rudraprayag district, at an altitude of 3583 m & situated at shores of river
Mandakini with soaring snow-clad mountain peaks and wooded forests at its backdrop. Kedarnath temple is
one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The temple is built of massive & evenly grey stones with a
large statue of the Nandi Bull situated outside the temple. The motorable road continues till Gaurikund
beyond its 16 Kms trek has to be done to reach Kedarnath. During winter due to heavy snowfall, the
Temple remains closed and shifted for six months (from Nov till Apr) to Ukhimath, 20 Kms away from
Guptkashi.
The flood of 2013 ruined the entire Kedarnath town except for the Kedarnath temple & brought massive
destruction to the place along with huge human casualties. The Nehru Institute of Uttarakhand had done a
fast restoration of the shrine & the temple was revamped a year after for devotees.

Gaurikund: Base for a trek to Kedarnath. The village
has hot springs & a temple dedicated to Gauri.
Vasuki Tal: It is a high glacial charming lake with
iconic environs & majestic view of Chaukhamba peaks. This place has religious importance also, it is
believed that Lord Vishnu took bath at this lake.
Sonprayag: At Sonprayag union of two rivers Basuki &
Mankadini takes place. This place is believed to be offer salvation to those who take a bath in
it.

By Road - Roads are the most preferable mode to visit
Kedarnath. From Haridwar & Rishikesh you’ll easily get the bus for Sonprayag/Guptkashi. Once you reach
here. You can take any local transport for the Gaurikund and from there you can reach Kedarnath by doing
an 18 km trek.
By Train - The nearest railway station to Kedarnath is
Rishikesh located at a distance of 215 km approx.
By Flight - Jolly Grant airport is the closest airport
which is 240 km approx
Gaurikund is the last stop where any transport vehicle can visit. And to reach Kedarnath from Gaurikund
you have to do 16 km of trekking. If you want to avoid trekking then you can also hire a pony or another
alternate option is you can take a Helicopter flight from the Guptkashi/Phata/ Gaurikund etc. (Chardham

Yes it is completely safe to visit Kedarnath. The road is well connected till Sonprayag and heli service is also available from Phata, Sonprayag, Gaurikund. But it is advised to avoid yatra in monsoon or on a rainy day.
